Different types of Driving record Available in Texas
The word Texas like most other states has a law on the books that requires it to keep a record of each accident report and abstract of the court record of a conviction received by the department under a law of this state.Like (Texas ยง 521.042) Therefore any time you get in an accident or are convicted of a traffic offense it goes on your Texas driving record and stays there. If you are taking a Texas defensive driving course to have a ticket dismissed the fact that you took a defensive driving course also appears on your driving record although the ticket itself will not.
In many states the state simply keeps these records on file for its own use. If the insurance company or a potential employer needs to see a copy they can request one. Anyhow in Texas it's not quite that simple. There are six different types of Texas driving records that you can request from the state. So, therefore it's important to request the right type of driving record to ensure you get the information you need.
Now here are the different types of Texas driving records along with the information contained in each:
Type 1: Status Record: - This record shows your name, birthday & whether or not your license is active and your last known address.
Type 2: 3-Year History Record: -it shows all of the above information and also a list of your accidents and violations for the past 3 years.
Type 2a: Certified 3-Year History Record: -this Contains the same information as Type 2 but it costs more to obtain and is certified by the Texas Custodian of Records.
Type 3: List of all the accidents and violations in record: - This record shows your name birthday whether or not your license is active and a list of any and all accidents and convictions you've incurred during your Texas driving career. Only we can request a copy of this type of driving record.
Type 3a: Certified list of all accidents and violations in record: - it contains the exact same information as Type 3 but it has been certified by the Texas Custodian of Records. This is the 1 and only type of driving record that is acceptable to bring to court if you have a traffic ticket that you'd like to get dismissed. Like it is a non-certified twin only you can obtain this type of record.
Type 4: this type of needs Certified Abstracts of the Driving Recorda certified summary of your driving record.
Procedure to Request your Texas Driving Record
If anytime you find yourself needing a copy of your driving record you can order it online through the Texas Department of Public Safety website. This system operates 24 hours a day and 7 days a week except for routine maintenance down time andthat not all even you can also request your driving record by mailing in this Application for Copy of Driver Records Form.
You may request the following types of driving records (fees and requirements for each type of record are listed)
STATUS RECORD (TYPE 1) (Name, date of birth (DOB), license status, and latest address)
3-YEAR HISTORY RECORD (TYPE 2)
(Name, DOB, license status, list of accidents and violations in record within past three-year period)
LIST OF ALL THE ACCIDENTS AND VIOLATIONS RECORD (TYPE 3)
(Name, DOB, license status, list of all accidents and violations in record)
CERTIFIED 3 YEAR COMPLETE HISTORY RECORD (TYPE 2A)
Certified version of Type 2.This type of record is not acceptable for Defensive Driving Course (DDC)
CERTIFIED LIST OF ALL THE ACCIDENTS AND VIOLATIONS RECORD (TYPE 3A)
Certified version of Type 3: This record is likely acceptable for Defensive Driving Course (DDC)CERTIFIED ORIGINAL LEGAL ABSTRACTS OF THE DRIVING RECORD ("AOR")
Certified and legal abstract needed of the complete driving record of a license holder
You can also submit your payment online using one of the credit cards accepted by the DPS. Required driving record will be mailed out to your address provided on the application within minimum five days after submission of the request. Sometimes the delivery via US Mail takes approximately three business days.
